Oh you bet I do – I love quotes – my work and personal emails are always appended with a quote of some kind. I have MANY that I love – but one of my favorites is as follows:
“I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas”
– Ned Flander’s Mother
Why do I come back to it? Well, that’s simple…I’m a research librarian…and this was the calling card for most of the university students that I ‘helped’ at the reference desk. It also seems to be apropos when dealing with my child. And at times other adults that reside in my house…
My other favorite:
Rick: Honestly, I don’t know why I bother sometimes.
Vyvyan: I don’t know why you bother ever.
– The Young Ones
This requires little explanation – it just makes me laugh…Ah Vyvyan Basterd, how I love thee…
well it’s gotta be, ‘what in the name of greek buggery, is the use of a plastic duck?’
I LOVE those two… Thank you ~
i saw one of their bottom live shows….i could watch them all day, although mayall is my favourite
I love Rick (Rik?) Mayall – goofy eye and all….and I love his weird lisp. Both of them were my favorites on The Young Ones – I fancied myself a Marxist during some of my high school years, I’m sure I was just as annoying as he was… I loved when he was eating laxatives and reciting hid poems…he’s the people’s poet, ya know!
Seeing them live must have been fabbo.
‘hands up who likes me!’ and i don’t think anyone could be quite as annoying as rik! i remember the first bit i ever saw of the young ones; vyvyan reading the sign on the train that said ‘do not lean out of the window’, ‘i wonder why’….him kicking his head down the tracks had me in fits!
live was indeed fabbo
I love “hands up, who likes me!” – I have watched all the Young Ones episodes a gazillion times and it’s even better with captions – that way I don’t miss the stuff I was unsure about and could look it up later… and I LOVE the landlord.
My most favorite episode was ‘Interesting’
i haven’t seen the young ones in a long old time – i’m far more knowledgable about bottom – i’m gonna have to look up and remind myself of interesting
Huge sandwich falls from the sky from the four horses of the Apocalypse – Rik puts a tampon in Rhianna’s drink at the party, thinking it’s a ‘mousie’ – until it ‘goes all big’ 🙂
i know the one…..vyvyan’s ‘press-ups’ caused a bit of a problem with the BBC censors…apparently they thought it was simulating sexual intercourse….i for one, don’t do it like that….
Good to know – about your sexual intercourse movements.
I remember a scene where they are all sitting around a table and someone moves and you can totally tell that Rick has painfully SLAMMED his knee/shin into the edge of the table – hee hee… live TV – so fine, so fine.
i’d have loved to have been in the audience for one of the episodes
ME TOO! Alas – I’m not in England nor would I have been quite old enough to go in the early 80s.
it seems that a large part of your heart is over here though….or at least your sense of humour!
i was only born in 81 so i’d’ve had no chance, even if i really really wanted to
Ugh – I was born in 1970 – born in ’81, eh…
You’re right, I WISH I could be in England…
I love English history too – especially from the 11th-15th century.
a very interesting period….although the peasants were revolting
The civil war btwn Stephen & Maud was horrific!
it’s not a happy state of affairs if one must diguise oneself as a corse
and i couldn’t resist putting this in:
MY MOST FAVORITE MOVIE EVER! I used to have my email yell “Help! Help! I’m being repressed!”
what a great idea!
it was my first foray into monty python; i got the same feelings when i watched vyvyan’s head come off that i did when i saw them coming over the hill with the coconuts….genius
Well, I get a lot of email at work – so it was quickly muted b/c it was completely annoying. Yes, genius.
i can imagine…funny for a day
My office mate wasn’t so amused after about 3 hours….hee hee… mawhahahaha…and he’s a complete Python nerd as well.
so of course he said, ‘i’d like to have an argument, please.’
It depends: tail or no tail?
no it isn’t
yes, it is.
this could get sil……….ah……..my bad
yes, it is.
hadn’t seen that one before 🙂
WHAT???? Oh, I forget, you’re a young ‘un…are English children ALLOWED to not watch Monty Python? It’s not required for passing some sort of Levels?
it is not in our curriculum at the moment; but come the glorious day, citizen
Ha ha – dystopia is another interest of mine as well….
you think of DYStopia when i mention me taking over the country??? have we met….
It made me think of 1984…
You never know – I’ve been almost nowhere near England.
taking over is too much like hard work…
Holy crap – have you met ME? I never want to be the prez or any kind of leader because I suspect it would involve evening and weekends. I’m done with thinking around 3PM.
perhaps you could delegate an evening and weekender and an after 3pmer
Then I couldn’t be an absolute ruler – it’s all or nothing for me and I prefer nothing.
it’s the paperwork that would get on my nerves….that and having to deal with the bloody proles
That too – and the rubber chicken dinners.
i would’ve banned them
That would have taken extra paperwork…
………i would blog it
Only word-nerds will read it.
you say that…..i’ve read some pretty un-nerdy stuff out there
Well, they let the bloody proles write too, don’t they?
bloody freedom of expression
bastards…(I wanted to yell “Spliters!” but we weren’t discussing Life of Brian…and it would have seemed out of place and nonsensical…which is nothing we’ve been about.)
Anyway, we’ll change that quickly…as soon as we find someone to do all the actual work. We’ll just sit around making suggestions that can’t be refused.
well if we’re yelling out stuff with no relevance, i’ll go for, ‘scrubbers!’ 10 points if you can name the film
well i have some children, and you have at least one, what use are they if not to do our bidding….
Um…no points for me!
Exactly – I need someone to do my bidding, for I am certainly not doing it.
withnail and i……cannot recommend it highly enough!
I’ve actually seen it – when I was just barely 21 yrs old.
my favourite film
Hairspray (the John Waters original) is my favorite film. Which is weird for me to have a favorite since I feel strongly about most EVERYTHING that I love… but I do love that film the most ~ the fat girl wins.
i must admit, it’s not on my ‘to see’ list
For shame…John Waters is marvelous. I loved him even more after reading “Shock Value” – I guess I love that move 1) it’s so camp 2) I used to be a fat girl 3) I love the music and it has Debra Harry and Sonny Bono– it’s a win-win-win-win movie.
i’m not a chick-flick kinda guy i guess….and don’t get me started on musicals!
It’s NOT a chick-flick – I HATE CHICK FLICKS! I HATE THEM!!!! And it’s NOT a musical…
my musicals comment was an aside…..and please accept my chick-flick faux-pas apology!!!!!!!
Ok – hyperventilating done…
Your punishment is being subjected to a post link –
hardly a punishment
That remains to be seen
….you’re right, i read it and it was awful, you mean mean woman!
I am – a disappointment thru and thru
especially due to your spelling of through…
that as well –
Only these people would read it actually…
good enough for me!
Twelvedy.
i can i can’t
Don’t touch the precious things –
And now I must put my child to bed….I have some Monarchy on Netflix to watch….yes, I like boring documentaries…and I completely missed it on PBS (which is ironic since I work with public TV data all day long…)
happy documentary watching; and don’t fret about missing something with which you work; i work in a hotel and purposefully go out of my way to avoid the guests!
People in hotels are particularly funny. Especially at Basil Fawlty’s place…
we are known around these parts as the local fawlty towers…..
Hilarious – what do you do at said ‘hotel’
i work nights; so i’m a glorified cleaner or a fallen security guard
With a mop and a nightstick?
it’s more of a combined tool; a mopstick, if you will
Spills and cleans blood! All in one convenient tool ~ as seen on TV!
as seen in court
same place in America
haha
I’m still chagrined that you THOUGHT I liked chick flicks – I am totally UNGIRLY
you strike me as someone upon whom a judgement cannot be made, therefore an assumption that you would not like a certain genre seems incongruous to me……
I like being incongruous ~ you can totally judge me – but I have never and will never see Sleepless in Seattle and regret that I was forced to watch Forrest Gump and Titanic (spew)….
I did sucumb to watching ‘bridesmaids’ b/c I had a horrific episode in a bridal store (which you can read about if you want) but it was torture to watch.
i got married in goa on a boat; for the wedding video one of the pieces of music they ended up choosing was the celine dion song from titanic….genius
If I make vomit noises will you be offended? Wow – married in Goa? Are one of you from India?
There’s DJ Dave Song called Yoga Girl (and I’m not a rap fan, but I love DJ Dave) and there’s a line that goes:
We can go to Goa and sip some Mango Lassie …
I love this song… it’s clever
not at all, however it is one of the funniest videos you’ll ever see!
neither of us are indian; we’d booked a holiday there anyway and then decided we’d get married so tacked that on……as you do
well of course – go to India – then get married – happened to me at least zero times in my life. Our wedding ‘music’ is Frank Zappa’s “We are not alone” – whom I prefer over Celine..
i prefer the sound of a puppy getting kicked over celine under normal circumstances….but like a lot of things, context forgives
I’ll blindly trust you on that
music to my ears
Like DEVO and The Angry Samoans or like Lawrence Welk?
2:28 is when the scary red head starts his rap…
I have so many! But my favourites at the moment:
“There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” (Beverly Sills)
“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” (Pablo Picasso)
It’s hard to not love a variety of excellently said saysing.
My latest favorite comes courtesy of Bill Hayes:
“I didn’t get where I am today by being right…”
Hee hee – see? This is why I nominated you!
I love Longfellow. My two favorites quotes of his are:
If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.
Round about what is, lies a whole mysterious world of might be, — a psychological romance of possibilities and things that do not happen.
They are both great truths about life, which is what I love about them. 🙂
So many people have so many wise and wonderful insights to the world. Thank you for sharing those ~
I think the entire Simpsons series is my favorite quote.
I would have to agree – one of my favorites quotes:
“Marge, these people looked deep within my soul and assigned me a number based upon the order in which I joined….”
Not to be topped by Mr Burns’ “onion on my belt” story… etc, etc, etc…
We are constantly the quoting the time a construction worker catcalled Marge and said, “Hey, lady! I like the way ya’ body looks!”
Hee hee…
I don’t know why I bother when nothing works and ideas are nowhere to be found.
I’ll quote you on that
Woohoo! Do I get loyalties? 😉
Only me as a loyal reader….
Oh, I thought I had that already. Well, at least I know I do now. That comforts me so.
I’ll send you lint from the bottom of my backpack.
Nothing in your pocketses?
I don’t like pockets, zippers and buttons…
I’m somewhat afraid, yet curious to know: what exactly do you wear if you like none of those things?
Tee shirts, hippie cotton skirts, shorts, yoga pants
And if you need to dress formally for something?
There a lot of dresses that work –
I see.
Do you?
Well enough to read our convesation.
No favorite quotes, but I have a favorite post now!
🙂
I have to admit, I’ve never watched The Young Ones. Please, don’t respond by blocking my IP address.
That is a funny quote, though. 🙂
I LOVE the Young Ones…you have to watch a couple to kind of ‘prime the piston’ – They were excellent in the 80s and continue to be funny in this century (still the same 12 episodes).
I would never block you IP….I’ve become quite fond of your blog.
I’ll have to check the show out, then. I’ll trust your enthusiasm. 🙂
hee hee….Interesting is one of my favorite episodes. I love Rick (with a silent P) and Vyvyan
Both very good quotes.
Thank you!
Oh my gosh, these are perfect!
I worked in the library in college (at the circulation desk) and thought about becoming a research librarian. I would’ve been frustrated, though, I think, with the laziness. It was bad enough dealing with the students who had late fines (and no remorse).
I’ve been coaching my husband to make an attempt at looking for things before he asks me where they are. He thinks it’s easier and saves time just to ask me. Luckily, when I explained that it BOTHERS me, and that I’d be happy to help him find things AFTER he makes some effort, he understood and is trying to change.
Hee hee… my father opens the fridge, looks at EVERYTHING but the what’s in the fridge and asks where something is…
I wasn’t bothered by the students at the ref. desk – job security! But it was interesting ~ I love research –
You must be a more patient sort!
I worked as a vocational evaluator for several years, and learned patience – I had to figure out how to explain and give tests to a variety of people with different issues – I have a high tolerence for repeatition…ironically, I have more patience with strangers than my family at times.
That’s a good point.
I worked in a career center at a community college for a year–we did vocational testing with a computerized version of the Myers-Briggs. It was really fun.
But then, how could it not be fun to apply Jungian philosophy in a practical setting?
Hee hee – that was just one aspect of the Voc Eval that we did – it was an interesting job!
You quoted The Young Ones!! I haven’t met anyone who remembers that show. I watched it in college when it was on MTV. I loved it.
I think I’m going to have to use “I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas.” Brilliant.
The quote I use the most, at least in my head, is “Be water, my friend” from Bruce Lee. It’s part of something longer he was saying. My other favorite is from a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, “this life is more than just a read-through.”
I love The Young Ones ~ I watch them all the time. I like “Be water, my friend”…
Quotes are GREAT! Thanks for reading ~
Rutabaga – A couple of nice quotes you added to the discussion. I see quotes here and there, but unless I am diligent to record them they fall away as quickly as my eyes dart to the next “shiny thing”.
I keep about 100 quotes associated with my outlook account – I wish I had a random picker for it though! So many good things that are said by people ~
Ah – you have Raccoon-itis..
Yes, I suspect you do hear “I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas” at a library reference desk!
or variations thereof….
I was thinking about “Quid quid agis prudenter agas et respice finem” or “Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.”, but then I thought, “dang, I have to say why I like these” and I’m just too lazy this morning.
I like yours, though.
I’m a simple person with simple quotes 🙂
Hmm. Then I have no idea what mine say about me.
I do know, though, that I have a love for the complex, and like a fickle lover, it’s driving me insane at times.
I like complex but I don’t like to explain complex 🙂
